EDUB 542 Developmental and Remedial Instruction and Support in Reading

Course Description

In this course candidates will examine various individualized and group instructional interventions and programs. They will become familiar with and evaluate exemplary and controversial programs through a field experience visitation. Current research and trends and issues in literacy instruction will be discussed. Candidates will learn techniques for facilitating staff development and support of other reading professionals. 

Week 1

Lecture: Introduction

Lecture: Psychological and Physical Factors

Outcomes

  • Learn the terms that identify the severity of reading disabilities
  • Define reading disability by discrepancy
  • Analyze the reading gap and factors that contribute to the gap
  • Examine sociological and psychological factors that affect reading achievement
  • Compare how reading is affected by vision and hearing

Week 2

Lecture: Language and School Factors

Lecture: Effective Teachers and Schools

Outcomes

  • Discover the effect oral language and vocabulary have on reading achievement
  • Define the phonological, semantic, syntactic, morphological, and pragmatic systems of language
  • Examine developmental language acquisition and vocabulary acquisition
  • Compare the original effective teaching and effective schools research with more recent research
  • Examine the characteristics of Beat-the-Odds schools and Golden Spike schools
  • Analyze the obstacles encountered in becoming effective teachers and developing effective schools

Week 3

Lecture: Scientifically Based Research & APA

Outcomes

  • Define scientifically-based reading research
  • Learn the APA format for in-text citations and references

Week 4

Lecture: RTI and Early Intervention

Outcomes

  • Define types of reading intervention programs
  • Investigate RTI in greater detail
  • Compare four early intervention programs
  • Examine a study of children difficult to remediate
  • Analyze which characteristics are common in these studies

Week 5

Lecture: Brain Function in Reading

Outcomes

  • Learn about basic brain functions in developing readers
  • Compare brain activity in dyslexic readers to novice developmental readers and accomplished readers
  • Examine some options for teaching children with severe difficulties in reading

Week 6

Lecture: Lecture: Comprehension and Prereading

Lecture: During Reading: Skills and Strategies

Outcomes

  • Define levels of comprehension
  • Examine factors affecting comprehension
  • Discuss several research findings in comprehension
  • Examine a variety of prereading and during reading strategies and activities that aid comprehension 

Week 7

Lecture: After Reading

Outcomes

  • Examine after-reading strategies and activities to aid comprehension

Week 8

Lecture: Extensive Reading and Motivation

Outcomes

  • Investigate the correlation between reading volume and reading achievement
  • Investigate how attitudes of teachers and students affect reading achievement and motivation
  • Examine how motivation, choice and interest are interrelated
