EDUB 541 Developmental and Remedial Materials and Resources
Course Description
In this course, candidates will investigate current philosophies and practices in literacy instruction. Developmental and remedial materials, including basal programs, leveling systems, scope and sequence, and supplementary sources and materials, will be examined. Candidates will develop guidelines for evaluating and selecting materials for classroom and small group use. They will identify the characteristics of successful reading professionals and the resources they use: professional journals, national and state standards, professional organizations, and online resources. Attendance at a professional reading conference is a field experience requirement.

Lecture: What Research Tells Us
Outcomes
- Recognize and explain the research that drives the science of reading instruction
- Identify and investigate current issues and exemplary programs in literacy
Week 3
Lecture: School Reform Models
Outcomes
- Know and understand the historical influence of school reform initiatives
- Demonstrate knowledge of strategies and stages of literacy development, and the materials and resources available, of individual differences among learners as they develop literacy
- Demonstrate knowledge of the nature and multiple causes of reading and writing difficulties
Week 4
Lecture: What is a Reading Curriculum
Outcomes
- Investigate the current philosophies and practices in literacy education
- Identify which characteristics and materials may be conducive to literacy development and remediation
Week 5
Lecture: Sharing the Responsibility of All Children Learning
Outcomes
- To recognize, understand, and differentiate between the different teaching jobs in a school
- To identify characteristics of successful reading professionals and apply those findings to their own teaching and learning experiences
Week 6
Lecture: Sharing the Responsibility of All Children Learning

- Recognize the value of professional development and its effect on teaching and learning
Week 7
Lecture: Family Involvement
Outcomes
- Understand the role educators play in creating effective parent involvement
- Identify and respond to needs of a wide variety of constituencies for information on literacy development

- To recognize and understand the underlying elements that create a successful program
