Reading Clinic Course Information

EDUB 555 Reading Clinic

Course Description

This course provides reading specialist candidates with an opportunity to put into practice theories of reading diagnosis and remediation, and selection of materials and resources. Under the supervision of a certified Reading Specialist, candidates determine strengths and needs of individual students who are experiencing difficulties in reading and develop an intervention plan. Candidates prepare professional case studies and collaborate with allied professionals. 

Week 1

Lecture: Introduction to Clinic

Outcomes

  • Understand the requirements of a clinic intervention, including two students of different grade levels
  • Learn how to prepare a balanced, but targeted, lesson plan and reflective log
  • Review your objectives
  • Locate materials by grade level and interest
  • Plan for submitting a video

Week 2

Lecture: Interventions for Word Recognition

Outcomes

  • Find appropriate intervention strategies for those in need of word recognition or vocabulary instruction and practice
  • Learn to use a method of word recognition or vocabulary review and retirement in preparation for your case study

Week 3

Lecture: Interventions for Comprehension

Outcomes

  • Choose appropriate intervention strategies for comprehension instruction and practice
  • Consider the need for additional testing

Week 4

Lecture: Interventions for Developing Sight Words

Outcomes

  • Choose appropriate intervention strategies for those in need of sight word practice
  • Choose appropriate intervention strategies for those in need of fluency

Week 5

Lecture: Interventions for Early Literacy and Draft I of the Case Studies

Outcomes

  • Find appropriate intervention strategies for those in need of early literacy concepts
  • Learn how to complete the preliminaries of Section V, Instruction During Clinic of the case studies
  • Achieve consistency of format among objectives, materials and methods, and evidence of gain

Week 6

Lecture: Interventions for Reading Expository Text

Outcomes

  • Find appropriate intervention strategies for reading informational text

Week 7

Lecture: Reviewing the Case Study and Preparing for Evidence of Gain

Outcomes

  • Evaluate your interventions
  • Prepare for the Evidence of Gain section of the case study

Week 8

Lecture: Evidence of Gain and Future Teacher Recommendations

Outcomes

  • Learn how to complete post-testing and your case study
