EDUB 661 Literacy Development for English Language Learners

Course Description

In this course, candidates focus on the developmental stages, skills, and processes of reading and writing acquisition for English Language Learners. Candidates explore how the teaching of reading and writing in both the first and second language provides the foundation for the full development of academic language proficiency in various content areas such as science, social studies, and math. 

Week 1

Lecture: Introduction

Lecture: Defining Literacy

Outcomes

  • Examine the multiple definitions of literacy
  • Analyze the value of each type of literacy
  • Assess which types of literacies the ELL students in her/his school setting embody

Week 2

Lecture: Phonetics and Phonological Awareness

Outcomes

  • Understand how and why the phonetics of the ELL student’s first language affects the pronunciation of the second language, English
  • Examine how the history of the English language affects its phonetics
  • Examine the place and manner of sound articulation in the English language
  • Categorize the types of errors that may occur in English pronunciation

Week 3

Lecture: Fluency

Outcomes

  • Define fluency
  • Examine the relationship between fluency and comprehension
  • Analyze how to measure reading rates
  • Incorporate many different fluency strategies in her/his future ESL classroom

Week 4

Lecture: Word Recognition

Outcomes

  • Recognize the importance of decreasing the language gap through greater recognition of words
  • Incorporate the word development strategies listed here
  • Recognize the role of memory in recognizing word spellings

Week 5

Lecture: Vocabulary Development

Outcomes

  • Contrast vocabulary acquisition and vocabulary development
  • Examine research conducted on vocabulary development
  • Incorporate myriad ways of increasing vocabulary knowledge for ELL students

Week 6

Lecture: Reading Comprehension

Outcomes

  • Examine the difference between reading fluency and reading comprehension
  • Examine what happens physiologically, neurologically and cognitively when ELL students interact with written text
  • Understand what strategies good readers and good comprehenders utilize
  • Incorporate multiple strategies for reading comprehension

Week 7

Lecture: The Writing Process

Outcomes

  • Understand the stages of writing for ELL students
  • Understand that writing is both a process and a product
  • Incorporate both traditional and progressive writing practices in the ESL classroom
