Course Description
In this course, candidates explore effective instructional methods and curriculum design for teaching English as a Second Language. Current approaches to English language teaching, as well as reflection on new insights from research in second language acquisition, are examined.
Week 1
Lecture: Traditional Methods
Outcomes
- Examine three different traditional methods of teaching language
- Examine how to execute the three different methods
- Examine the techniques and strategies that are incorporated in the respective methods
- Evaluate the pros and cons of each method of teaching
Week 2

Week 3
Lecture: Progressive Methods
Outcomes
- Analyze how research in cognitive psychology caused a revolution in how we teach languages
- Understand that progressive methods of teaching languages are more student-centered, interactive, and functional
- Compare and contrast the various methods in order to see similarities and differences within them
Week 4

Week 5
Lecture: Content Area Methods
Outcomes
- Examine how language teaching methods are different from content area methods
- Analyze her/his curriculum to ensure that attention is given equally to the acquisition of the English language along with the acquisition of content knowledge
- Examine her/his teaching to reflect on which methods guide her/his pedagogy

Week 7
Lecture: Curriculum Design
Outcomes
- Examine the characteristics of a strong lesson plan format
- Understand the differences between a thematic unit, an interdisciplinary unit, and cross-disciplinary connections within the curriculum
- Begin to map the curriculum
Week 8
Lecture: Materials and Modifications for the ESL Classroom
Outcomes
- Incorporate various types of materials that will help ESL students in their mainstream classrooms
- Examine the importance of curriculum modifications and accommodations for the ESL student
- Closely observe how to conduct textbook adaptations
