Job Resources for Teachers

Thanks to the Internet, job searches are not daunting. Resources are a click away! Search the following sites:

EducationCrossing

Touted as “the largest collection of educational jobs on earth,” EducationCrossing is a job reporting service. They conduct extensive research from online and printed resources (job boards, and websites of both employers and professional associations). According to the website, the company does not accept money from employers or advertisers, so its research is uninfluenced by others. They “simply report the Education jobs to you that are out there.” EducationCrossing is owned by Employment Research Institute, a large conglomerate of job search-related companies. The options are extensive; job samples include:

  • Academic advisor
  • English teacher
  • Art teacher
  • Online teacher
  • School principal
  • College faculty

At the time of review, EducationCrossing posted 83,319 jobs, with 20,178 new jobs post within the last week. You can save up to five different searches, such as “Dean of Education” and “physics teacher.” For each search, a daily email with job alerts is an optional feature. This resource also allows the seeker to tailor job searches by state; for example, Florida had 2,282 posted jobs at the time of this review. The search can be further refined by specific city within the chosen state. The company offers a 72-hour free trial, but charges for its services: $39.95 for a monthly membership, with discount available for three-month, six-month, and 12-month memberships.

Teachers-Teachers

This free service is designed to help educators find a varied choice of teaching and administrative jobs, including other related service positions. From 1,467 school systems and private schools nationwide, sample positions include:

  • Career-Technical
  • Coaching
  • Private School Administration
  • Day Care centers
  • Montessori
  • Foreign language
  • Special Education
  • Pupil services, such as school nurse or school psychologist

The service has user-friendly website and does require registration. Once registered, an online employment application can be submitted to many posted jobs, yet some employers may require additional applications. You can specify your preferences (for example, location and employer type) to identify the best match. Employers will also review your preferences, and they may contact you.

As a job seeker, you can receive emails of new postings that match your preferences. By logging into a personal account, desired job postings can be saved in to a personal folder, and you can keep notes on your progress. This resource has a helpful feature: cover letters. You can create and save multiple cover letters, which can be attached to your application when responding to a job posting. Tracking your search through the application history page provides a record of all cover letters and applications sent through Teachers-Teachers.

SchoolSpring

SchoolSpring is a free online employment source for educators, offering a one-stop solution for managing the job search. The company began in 2001, with a mission to “provide an efficient and cost-effective forum for connecting educators with jobs.” Founders are husband and wife team Jim and Susan Fitzpatricks, former teachers and school administrators. Stated services include (1) executive recruitment and management feature for school districts and professional associations, (2) an executive search function for candidates, (3) document archiving, and (4) an interview management function. They also feature an interesting blog on their website at http://www.schoolspring.com/blog/.

Features include complete archiving of all necessary documents and certifications, as well as access to the all education jobs in their selected regions. Email alerts are sent when new jobs are posted. Information is entered once, along with submitted transcripts, a common application and reference letters. Job seekers can then apply to many positions, only needing to answer specific employer questions when requested. Many job opportunities are available:

  • Substitute teaching
  • Speech pathology
  • Tutoring
  • Summer teachers
  • International teachers
  • Environmental education

SchoolSpring Plus is a service that allows you to apply online for any job, anywhere in the world. Once you've completed your online portfolio, this resource will transmit professionally formatted application packages to any employer, whether or not their jobs are listed on SchoolSpring.

Education America Network (EAN)

EAN was developed as a one-stop Internet portal for education organizations and professionals. All resource information is provided free for personal use or classroom setting use. The company’s objective is “to make the recruitment process easier and more effective for both employers as well as professionals.” If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, there is no cost to register or apply to jobs. Non-U.S. citizen can register, but there is an annual fee of $99.95. For that fee, EAN will provide a set of services, such as:

  • Information on teaching in the United States
  • Immigration information
  • A search profile and the ability to upload your resume, a cover letter and up to 10 other professional documents
  • Ability to search, browse and apply to jobs in the United States from employer who accept international applicants
  • Notification when a new employer who accepts international applicants joins EAN

The EAN “Job Search” is a complete solution to finding a job from the available postings. You can choose the type of job (Teaching / Administrative etc.) and the subject area. Searches can be narrowed by desired state and city. At the time of this review, EAN had 22,865 jobs posted.

iHireElementaryTeachers

Formed in 1999, the iHireElementaryTeachers team is located in Frederick, Maryland and Angola, Indiana. This resource is “one of the largest specialty employment websites where recruiters and hiring managers find top talent.” Three different packages of service are offered:

  • Basic – Limited access to iHireElementaryTeachers job listings and occasional email job alerts.
  • Premium Access Do-It-Yourself – Access to all job listings, an automated job matching, a resume blast credit of $25, email alerts that match your ideal job, and a resume critique worth $75.
  • Premium Job Search Agent Service – Everything in the Premium Access Do-It-Yourself, plus personal help from an expert job search agent, located in the U.S.

The resource also has a service for hiring managers and recruiters. After registering, the employer toolset can be used to post multiple jobs, blast email messages to promising candidates, receive and sort candidate applications and send notifications to candidates to set up interviews. According to the company website, “small fees” are charged for services, to discourage job seekers that are not qualified.

Teachers.net Job Center

Teachers.net includes tabs for job postings for teachers and employers, as well as tabs for a chat center, lesson plans, projects and a blog. The site seems a bit cluttered with Google-style ads, but has varied information. You can search in several ways:

  • By Posting Date – Postings are listed as they become available. For example, postings from 9/22/2011 revealed three options – a Chicago Teacher Residency in Illinois, a Program Manager in New Jersey, and a Co-Teacher at a learning center in Massachusetts. A posting from 10/5/2011 was a single request for a Space Camp Crew Trainer in Alabama. A 10/6/2011 posting was limited to online tutor positions in Hong Kong.
  • By Search Criteria – Entering specific information will narrow the results. Available options are (1) job categories, which include teaching, administrator, schools support, tutor, and other; (2) location, which includes U.S. states, U.S. zip codes, and countless international locations, such as Bulgaria, China, Ecuador, Laos, and Saudi Arabia; and (3) desired job level, which ranges from preschool to college.

The database appears rather limited. For instance, a search using the keywords “Teaching, Alabama, Elementary (grades 1-5)” yielded “Sorry, no jobs currently match your search criteria, please try again!” The resource does allow applicants to post, store, and share resumes with potential employers.
